How to soundproof a vehicle, part 4: How to insulate and soundproof the boot. Reduce driving and exhaust noise.

Showcase Hummer H1 Part 4: Sound Insulation and Anti-drumming

How to reduce exhaust and road noise in your car
The boot, and the wheel arches in the boot, is a compartment of a vehicle that can be significantly improved with regards to sound insulation with relatively little effort. Noise produced by the exhaust or the rolling of tires result in a monotonous sound, rendering driving tiresome. Fatigue caused by noise can result in dangerous situations in traffic!

In this part we insulate or soundproof the floor in the boot of a car. This is best done by insulating the whole boot with bitumen damping sheets, Vibraflex Extreme or Vibraflex UF 8 kg/m². These procucts increases the mass of the sheet metal and isolates vibrations, thus insulate noise from the exhaust and the tyres touching the road. In general, this provides a reduction of 6 dB(A). Finished with Isomat FM this can rise to about 9 dB(A)! Isomat is a noise insulating mat and upholstery.

  • Step 1
Before insulating the boot, all of the surface of the bodywork should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased first. As for degreasing, you can use break cleaner, for example.
  • Step 2
Cut the Vibraflex bitumen anti-drumming plates to size before you heat them up, since cutting becomes more difficult when they are warm and supple. After cutting, place the plates at the desired places, in order to check if they fit.
  • Step 3
Heat up the Vibraflex sheets, as this makes them more flexible, for easy installation. This will also make the adhesive more responsive. You can use a hair dryer, but you can also lay the sheets on a heating radiator. Just above room temperature is fine.
  • Step 4
Remove the protection foil of the self-adhesive layer. Then, place the Vibraflex sheets on the surface you want to insulate. Press the sheets firmly in place, we advise to use our pressure roller, making sure no air remains between the surface and the sheets.
  • Step 5 (optional)
By placing Isomat FM you can enhance the sound insulation even more. This product contains a wear-resistant top layer, allowing it to be simultaneously used as a floor mat.
